Virtuoso Clarinet Player:
The virtuoso clarinet player that we will be talking about today is Woody Allen. In case you don't know what the word virtuosic means, it means advanced.
First, I'm going to start with a short paragraph about Woody's music life. Woody Allen started learning the clarinet in the 1950's. He has been a part of his New Orleans Jazz band for over 25 years. In 1996 Allen and his director Barba Kopple recorded Allen's 1996 concert tour of Europe with his band. This tour turned into a documentary film in 1998 called Wild Man Blues (Down below I will provide a link) . The documentary covered 18 venues in 23 days which showcased Woody Allen's skills as a clarinet player and his complicated private life. Woody Allen has played the clarinet in many soundtracks of movies he made, including Sleeper (1973) and Wild Man Blues (1997). Allen often mentions in interviews that the clarinet is an important part in his life.

Now, we are going to talk about a piece of virtuoso music Woody Allen plays. The name of the piece is called Till We Meet Again (1918) by Richard Whiting and Raymond B. Egan. Here is the link for the piece music (Till We Meet Again (Woody Allen)). I think this is a virtuoso piece of music because he was able to control his breathing, keep rhythm, Add slurs, and add dynamics. Throughout the entire video you could see that he was keeping point on the beat and rhythm of the music. He also did an amazing job controlling his breathing. You could see that every time he had a break he took a quick, deep breathe, that gave him enough air for the next part of his music. This is a skill of a virtuoso musician because lots of people still struggle with keeping the rhythm of music, and controlling their breathing. It's hard because they also have to focus on playing the right notes and knowing where you are in the piece of music. Another reason why Woody Allen is a virtuoso musician is because of how clearly he plays his slurs. When listening to the video you can tell that he added some slurs into the music, and this is hard because the tempo of the music is really fast. An example of a place where he added slurs into the music would be at 0:7 - 0:10 in the video. The last trait that Woody Allen has that makes him a virtuoso musician is that he adds dynamics to his music. In the piece Till We Meet Again, Allen had lots of different dynamics and when he played them he made them all sound clear and kept rhythm. Another example of a part where Allen changed the dynamics in the music was at 1:50 - 1:54. These are my reasons why I think Woody Allen is a virtuoso clarinet player.
